Inside the Pages: Exploring Valley of the Birdtail with the Authors
Osler was pleased to welcome authors Douglas Sanderson (Amo Binashii) and Andrew Stobo Sniderman for a discussion about their acclaimed book, Valley of the Birdtail: An Indian Reserve, a White Town, and the Road to Reconciliation. This book follows multiple generations of two families, one white and one Indigenous, and weaves their lives into the larger story of Canada. Valley of the Birdtail is about how two communities became separate and unequal—and what it means for the rest of us. They discussed the role law has played in creating this inequality, as well as the role law might play in reconciliation.

Performing Open-Heart Surgery with a Blindfold: How to encourage collaboration and engagement in live, virtual, and hybrid work environments
Most people, including lawyers, report some level of anxiety around speaking-up in meetings. At the same time, most people believe that when the situation is really important (i.e., when talking about work), people on their team will overcome this fear. Unfortunately, the research is clear—most people, most of the time, prefer to stay silent rather than risk saying the wrong thing. This holds true for lawyers, and even for doctors performing heart surgery. Until recently, it was common for doctors and nurses to stay silent about potential problems during surgery for fear of speaking-up and being wrong. And if it’s happening during heart surgery, it’s happening on our teams (and especially your virtual or hybrid team). This session will help participants understand what’s going on and develop strategies for making sure people engage all the time.

In this roundtable discussion, practitioners and experts, led by Adam Kardash, shared experiences, reflections and suggested best practices in planning and implementing employer diversity and inclusion initiatives.
Indigenous Law: Past, Present and Future
Addressing the issues highlighted in the Truth and Reconciliation Commission’s findings is of critical importance to Canada. The legal system has been at the heart of these issues – from being used to implement failed and harmful policies, to landmark court decisions affirming indigenous rights and, going forward, to implement principles such as free, prior and informed consent in the UN Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples.
This seminar supports Indigenous intercultural competency learning, and provide an overview of the history of Indigenous-Crown relations, the current state of Indigenous law in Canada, and where the law might be headed.
